Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to do a bit of research into Youth Programs at the Longmont Climbing Collective (LCC). My name is TJ Sanford and I have been given the opportunity to work with the incredible staff at the LCC and wonderful community here in Longmont to build fun and meaningful youth programming at the gym. I’d like to give you an idea of where I come from and how I approach climbing instruction in the gym.
I started coaching competitive climbing back in 2007 and prior to that had coached youth soccer, baseball and springboard diving. In addition, I studied secondary education at the University of Michigan and then taught at a small private school while working at a local climbing gym in Michigan, Planet Rock. There, I was given the opportunity to mesh my passion for climbing with the education I was receiving about educating others. This is why I look at the climbing gym as a huge classroom for learning about and improving climbing skills. I also was given the chance to routeset and held the position of camp director for a few summers.
Following my 27-year stint in Michigan I made my way to Colorado and found work at the Boulder Rock Club (BRC) and Kent Mountain Adventure Center (KMAC). At the BRC I held the positions of the assistant head coach of the climbing team and a routesetter (currently USAC level 3 with endorsements). Over the last 5 summers working for KMAC I’ve helped develop curriculum, plan trips, train staff, and am now considered one of the senior guides of the company.
I believe that one of the most important factors that goes into having a meaningful, educational experience is the community surrounding and supporting that experience. With the help of a stellar coaching staff and support from the LCC staff and membership, I plan to help foster a safe, fun environment at the gym where everyone can explore and grow as a climber at their own pace!
